The Port of Long Beach Selects VideoRay
VideoRay ROVs help Protect the Gateway for Trade Between the United States and Asia
Phoenixville, PA - June 14, 2007
The Port of Long Beach Harbor Patrol recently added VideoRay ROV’s (remotely operated vehicles) to their array of port security technology. The underwater cameras outfitted with a variety of sensors and sonars will be employed throughout the vast and bustling port area in an effort to enhance the already tight security. Included in their acquisition were four VideoRay Pro 3 XE GTO submersibles with manipulator arms, two ProViewer P450E-15 high definition imaging sonars, two SeaSprite scanning sonars , Desert Star positioning and ship hull inspection systems, and an underwater gamma radiation detector.
The Patrol also successfully completed two weeks of system and operational training administered by VideoRay staff. To tie the training together at the conclusion, Sgt. Rich Rumfelt of the Long Beach Harbor Patrol designed and oversaw four fictional “Training Ops” which teams of four carried out with the help of their VideoRays. One example was to find and investigate an unidentified object attached to a pier wall and confirm the presence of radioactive material. The team involved in the “Op” mobilized in their command vehicle, made their way to the pier, and deployed the VideoRay from a station set up outside the vehicle. Using Desert Star Aquamap Shiphull to record and plot their position on the wall, the team located the submersed object and confirmed the presence of a radioactive material with their GM radiation tube sensor attached to the base of the VideoRay (Rumfelt planted a small sample of Cesium which is shipped with the product for test purposes). The mission was accomplished and the team was pleased with the results.
The Long Beach Harbor Patrol is the primary law enforcement agency in the Port of Long Beach in Long Beach, California. They receive support from the City of Long Beach Police Department in securing the large port area. The Harbor Patrol maintains a high-visibility patrol and responds to a wide variety of calls including vessel departures and arrivals, traffic accidents, industrial accidents, and ensuring terminals are compliant with United States Coast Guard security requirements.
The Harbor Patrol provides a variety of services above and beyond land-based patrol, including its own patrol boats, dive team, and officers specializing in bomb detection and terrorism. www.polb.com
With an immense port area to cover, the VideoRay should prove a perfect complement to the Harbor Patrol’s vessels, divers, and mobile command centers and will be an important asset in their efforts to maintain a safe and secure port.
The Port of Long Beach Harbor Patrol and their VideoRays will be featured in an upcoming special on LBTV8 in Long Beach, CA. Look for it to air at the end of May.
