Pavel Bohacik of Momentum Engineering carries the VideoRay ROV from one location to another while inspecting a floating 75 ton gas well jacket offshore Turkey. The extreme portability of the VideoRay provides unlimited opportunities to work from locations inaccessible by conventional ROV systems.

A replacement VideoRay ROV sits on the deck of a work boat waiting to conduct an underwater inspection of a floating gas well jacket offshore Turkey in the Black Sea. The VideoRay was a replacement for a Deep Blue VideoRay lost in an accident 48 hours prior and was hand carried from the VideoRay factory in Pennsylvania to Istanbul, Turkey the same day the call was received for assistance.

It’s the kind of accident that Project Managers dread. Momentum Engineering, of Dubai, UAE, is working on a major project to place gas production platforms in the Black Sea. Their procedures require two working ROVs during all active underwater operations, so two identical VideoRay Deep Blue units were ready in place, along with an experienced consultant. The VideoRays were performing as planned and designed, keeping the project on time and within budget. Then…
Without warning the ROV screen went blank, something had occurred that every ROV pilot fears. The VideoRay was pulled into a tug's propeller and destroyed.
All work was in danger of being stopped unless another working submersible could be obtained. Fortunately, most new VideoRay systems are covered by VideoRay’s Advantage program for one year. This program goes beyond the standard warranty to cover ALL operational problems – including user error – and provides for replacement or repair even in extreme cases such as the complete loss of a submersible. When possible, a loaner unit is provided while repairs or a replacement is arranged.
VideoRay’s support team received an urgent email at 7:30AM Monday morning from consultant Steve Van Meter on site in Turkey. Momentum Engineering required a replacement submersible faster than normal overnight delivery services, due to the potential of delays in Turkish Customs. Fortunately an employee was willing to deliver the unit in person, and was on a nonstop flight to Istanbul by 5PM the same day.
Momentum’s Project Coordinator David Shaw stated: “I thought VideoRay’s Advantage Program was amazing and so did everyone on the boat. I thought that replacing the unit was incredible and then giving us a loaner to use in the mean time was really unexpected and timely.” Steve Van Meter added “I was impressed with how fast VideoRay’s Advantage program made sure that everything was strategically planned and put into action, the employee and ROV traveled over 9000 miles in record time.”
Less than 48 hours after VideoRay first heard about the issue a loaner replacement was in the water and the project experienced no delays. Scott Bentley, the President of VideoRay stated:“
I had the privilege of meeting David Shaw during the training for their new systems. I explained that how the Advantage Program worked, and how both VideoRay and their dealer, Emirates Aviation of Abu Dhabi, would do whatever we could to ensure their success. I don’t know that he believed us at the time, and we hope we don’t often have to keep proving our commitment this seriously. But we’re proud of our customer support, and we’ll keep earning our customers’ loyalty.”
VideoRay now has far more Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) in service around the world than any manufacturer, and is delivering additional ROVs at an increasing rate. Weighing just 8 pounds and starting at $5995 USD, VideoRays can be equipped with sonar, positioning systems or other accessories, and are used for underwater surveys, offshore inspections, search and recovery, homeland defense, science, fish farming and a range of applications in underwater environments. In August, the General Services Administration (GSA) awarded VideoRay a contract to supply vehicles to the US government, making it easier and faster for many agencies to acquire one.
